Cooler weather helped firefighters gain 30% containment on the Franklin Fire in Malibu, allowing more than 3,000 residents to return home. The fire has burned over 4,000 acres and destroyed homes. Actor Dick Van Dyke and musician Cher had to evacuate, while Pepperdine University was threatened. Some roads opened, but 1,600 residents remained evacuated. Six homes were destroyed, and minor structures damaged. Over 1,700 firefighters and 16 helicopters were assigned to the fire, dropping water and fire retardant. Van Dyke shared a video of his evacuation and praised neighbors for helping save him. Residents Michelle and Blake Geffen lost their rental home and belongings. Pepperdine University lifted its shelter-in-place protocol. Red flag warnings contributed to the fire, but cooler weather has aided firefighting efforts. The newly formed Community Fire Brigade of Los Angeles County is assisting with firefighting and community advocacy. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Firefighters continue to work to ensure safety before residents can fully return home.
