Former U.S. Rep. Jim Leach, a moderate Republican from eastern Iowa who served in Congress for 30 years and later led the National Endowment for the Humanities, passed away at the age of 82. Leach represented Iowa until 2006 when he was defeated by a Democrat, and was known for his principled stance against the resolution authorizing the use of force in Iraq and the subsequent invasion. After leaving Congress, Leach endorsed Barack Obama for president in 2008 over his own party’s nominee, John McCain, citing Obama’s opposition to the Iraq war.
Recently, Leach and his former political opponent, Dave Loebsack, co-wrote an op-ed condemning the January 6th Capitol insurrection incited by Donald Trump. Loebsack praised Leach for his integrity and dedication to serving the people of Iowa, despite their political differences. Leach’s legacy as a relentless advocate for Iowa was also highlighted by his role as a professor and his donation of public and private papers to the University of Iowa libraries.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds offered her condolences, recognizing Leach’s contributions to the state and the country. Leach is survived by his wife, two children, and two grandchildren. His commitment to public service and principles of integrity and honor will be remembered by those who knew him.
