In a recent article published in the Des Moines Register, author Mike Michener argues that America is facing a crisis in its political system. The two major parties, Democrats and Republicans, are failing to address the concerns of most Americans and are instead appeasing their activist populist bases with backward-looking grievances.
Michener points out that both parties are at risk of suffering the same fate as the Whig Party in the mid-19th century, which collapsed due to its failure to address the pressing issue of slavery. He warns that the current state of the national dialogue is characterized by cultural orthodoxy on the left and reactionary policies on the right, leaving reasonable Americans feeling politically homeless.
In Iowa, a state once known for its pragmatic sensibility, voters are feeling disillusioned with the lack of constructive governance and growing polarization. However, Michener sees an opportunity for independent moderate candidates to lead the nation out of this political paralysis. He cites the example of Dan Osborn, an independent U.S. Senate candidate in Nebraska, whose campaign has shown that voters are willing to embrace candidates outside the traditional party system.
Michener calls on reasonable Americans, especially in Iowa, to reject the politics of division and embrace a politics of inclusion, reason, and progress. He believes that independent pluralists can offer voters a new vision focused on solving real problems and respecting diverse perspectives. Michener argues that if the current parties cannot adapt to this approach, they should be replaced by leaders who can.
