Iowa anglers have the opportunity to purchase a special paddlefish license and tags for the Missouri and Big Sioux Rivers starting from Dec. 15 to Jan. 7. The limited number of licenses available includes 950 for residents and 50 for nonresidents, with each license costing $25.50 and $49 respectively. Anglers must also possess a valid Iowa fishing license to participate.

Interested individuals can buy up to two tags, with the option to purchase one between Dec. 15 and 31, and an additional tag between Jan. 1 and 7. The license, harvest tag(s), and regulations will be sent to purchasers in mid-January, and completing an electronic survey is required to evaluate the season’s success. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources appreciates all feedback to help improve the paddlefish season for anglers.

The season for paddlefishing in the Missouri and Big Sioux Rivers will begin on Feb. 1 and continue until April 30. Anglers can find more information about Iowa’s special paddlefish season on the Iowa DNR website.
