Iowa Senator Joni Ernst Declines to Declare Support for Trump’s Nomination to Defense Department

Former President Donald Trump has announced his new team as he prepares for a political comeback, with key positions being filled by trusted aides and experienced professionals with strong ties to his administration. Dan Scavino, James Blair, and Taylor Budowich have been appointed as deputy chief of staff and assistants to the president. Scavino, known for running Trump’s social media profile, was also held in contempt of Congress for failing to comply with a subpoena related to the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. Blair, who was instrumental in Trump’s economic messaging during his successful 2024 campaign, will be focusing on legislative, political, and public affairs. Budowich, who spearheaded a super PAC in support of Trump’s recent campaign, will handle communications and personnel.

In the healthcare sector, Trump has nominated Dr. Jay Bhattacharya to lead the National Institutes of Health, a vocal critic of pandemic lockdowns and vaccine mandates who advocates for herd immunity. Dr. Marty Makary, appointed to the Food and Drug Administration, has opposed lockdowns and vaccine mandates, while raising questions about the effectiveness of booster shots. Dr. Janette Nesheiwat has been chosen as Surgeon General, and Dr. Dave Weldon will be working at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Furthermore, Trump has selected Jamieson Greer as U.S. trade representative and Kevin Hassett as director of the White House National Economic Council. Greer played a key role in negotiating trade deals and tariffs during Trump’s first term, while Hassett served as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers. These appointments reflect Trump’s focus on restoring confidence in the economy and reflecting his administration’s policies.
