Iowa Events this Month to Honor Veterans with ‘Wreaths Across America’

Volunteers in Sioux City’s Memorial Park Cemetery honored veterans by placing over 4400 wreaths at their gravesides as part of the “Wreaths Across America” program. Commander of American Legion Post 697, Rene LaPierre, spearheaded the effort after being inspired by the volunteers at Arlington National Cemetery. LaPierre expressed gratitude for the community’s support in making the event successful and memorable.

One poignant moment was when volunteers laid wreaths on their family members’ gravestones, honoring each veteran by saying their name aloud. Great West Casualty Company was among the contributors, with their chief operating officer, Mandy Graham, expressing surprise at the overwhelming community support for the event.

The ceremony began with wreaths being presented for each branch of the military and those missing in action. Similar events are scheduled at other Iowa cemeteries on December 14th. The Wreaths Across America website lists more than a dozen Iowa cemeteries where wreath-laying ceremonies will take place, honoring the sacrifices of veterans across the state.
