The Iowa State Board of Canvass met virtually on Monday to certify the results from the 2024 general election, officially finalizing the outcomes of races across the state. With a voter turnout of 74.1%, totaling 1,674,011 ballots cast, the Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate revealed that more registered Republicans participated in early voting this year compared to Democrats.
The certification process included the requested recounts and was noted for its smoother operation thanks to recent changes in election laws. Secretary of State Pate also outlined plans to request additional legislation from the state Legislature in 2025 to further streamline the voting process. Additionally, discussions are underway to address noncitizen voting in the upcoming legislative session following challenges in verifying the citizenship status of individuals listed as potential noncitizens.
The high participation in early and Election Day voting was praised by Pate, who credited county auditors, election workers, and volunteers for their efforts. The recount process in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District was conducted swiftly, partially due to guidance from Pate’s office urging county auditors to avoid mixing up recount techniques.
As the state gears up for the next legislative session, the focus will be on continuous improvements to ensure the integrity of the voting system.
