Gov. Kim Reynolds of Iowa received an award from the Iowa Taxpayers Association and promised more tax cuts in the future. She highlighted the state’s journey to tax competitiveness, mentioning recent laws that lowered income and corporate tax rates. Reynolds credited the success of Iowa’s tax reforms to a team effort involving legislators, advocates, and business leaders. She also noted that changes to retirement income taxes and property taxes have simplified the state’s tax system.
Democrats and some advocates have criticized the tax cuts, saying they disproportionately benefit high-income individuals and could impact funding for public schools and social services during economic downturns. Despite this, Reynolds and Republican lawmakers plan to introduce more tax policy proposals in the upcoming year.
Reynolds credited the success of Iowa’s tax reforms to the 2017 tax bill signed into law by President Trump. She encouraged Iowans to expect more tax policy changes in the future as Republicans take trifecta control in Washington, D.C., and the Iowa Statehouse.
