Iowa’s football team had the last laugh in their rivalry game against Nebraska, but it was no laughing matter before the game. Following Iowa’s 13-10 victory, Hawkeyes linebackers Jay Higgins and Nick Jackson called out Nebraska’s head coach and captains for their disrespectful pregame antics. Higgins claimed that Nebraska’s head coach walked through Iowa’s pregame warmups, while the Cornhuskers’ captains refused to shake hands with Iowa’s captains during the coin toss. Despite Nebraska taking a 10-0 lead into halftime, Iowa staged a dramatic second-half comeback, culminating in a game-winning field goal as time expired. After the game, Higgins shook hands with Rhule and implied that Iowa’s coach would never display such behavior. Iowa finished the regular season 8-4, while Nebraska ended at 6-6. Nebraska’s coach expressed disappointment in his team’s loss. Iowa’s social media department also poked fun at Nebraska’s actions with a post mocking the handshake snub.
