Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has appointed Dustin Hite as a district court judge in Judicial District 8A in Southeast Iowa, filling the vacancy left by retired Judge Gregory G. Milani. Hite, a former Iowa House member and mayor of New Sharon, received Reynolds’ endorsement in the 2022 elections but was defeated by Helena Hays. Hite’s appointment comes after his defeat in the primary election, where he voted against legislation supported by Reynolds.
In a separate development, Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird has joined a multistate lawsuit against investment companies BlackRock, State Street, and Vanguard. The lawsuit alleges that these companies have artificially suppressed coal generation, leading to increased energy costs. Bird argues that the companies’ climate policies, including net-zero requirements, will harm farmers and increase food insecurity. The lawsuit is led by Texas and includes states with Republican attorneys general such as Iowa, Alabama, Arkansas, and others.
Bird criticized the companies for prioritizing their own interests while families and farmers bear the financial burden. She vows to continue fighting against what she calls the “woke machine” that is impacting hardworking families and farmers. The lawsuit seeks to challenge the companies’ climate policies and protect consumers from rising electricity and grocery costs.
