A total of $416,000 in cost-share grants has been awarded to 138 rural fire departments in Iowa to aid in their efforts to prevent wildfires and protect the community. The grants, which cover 50 percent of the costs, will go towards wildfire suppression, personal protective equipment, and communications gear. Several departments in and around Des Moines, such as Cherokee, Fostoria, and Hawarden, are among the recipients of the Volunteer Fire Assistance grants for 2024.
These grants were made possible through a partnership between the Iowa DNR Forestry and the US Forest Service. Fire Supervisor Jason Walker stressed the importance of submitting Wildland Fire Reports whenever responding to a wildland fire, as it helps departments earn priority points on grant applications. These reports are crucial for compiling local and national data on wildfires, which is then reported to Congress. Interested fire departments can find more information and access reporting forms at www.iowadnr.gov/fire.
