ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is suing a former intern named Tian Keyu for $1.1 million in damages for allegedly attacking its artificial intelligence large language model training infrastructure. This case has garnered widespread attention in China due to its focus on AI technology, which is crucial in the current AI race. The lawsuit, filed with the Haidian District People’s Court in Beijing, is unusual as legal action against an intern for such a large sum is not common in China.
The technology in question, AI LLM training, is used for generative AI to produce text, images, and other output from large data sets. ByteDance has accused Tian of sabotaging the model training tasks through code manipulation and unauthorized modifications. It was reported that the intern was dismissed in August after ByteDance discovered the alleged malpractice.
ByteDance has declined to comment on the lawsuit, and Tian, identified as a postgraduate student at Peking University, has not responded to media inquiries. In a social media post in October, ByteDance mentioned that the rumors of the case costing millions of dollars and involving over 8,000 graphics processing units were “seriously exaggerated.”
