A federal appeals court has ruled that Border Patrol agents cannot cut razor wire installed by Texas on the U.S.-Mexico border in Eagle Pass. The Texas government has been adding more razor wire along its border to curb migrant crossings, but the Biden administration has sought to remove barriers on the Rio Grande. The court’s 2-1 decision blocked Border Patrol from damaging the wire in Eagle Pass, a move celebrated by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to the ruling.
The sharp wire has injured some migrants, and the Justice Department argued that it hinders border patrol efforts and aid to those in need. Texas accused the federal government of undermining its border security by cutting the razor wire. The ruling coincides with expectations of a tough stance on immigration when President-elect Donald Trump returns to office. Arrivals at the border have decreased partially due to Mexican vigilance. This decision marks a win for Texas in its ongoing immigration policy clash with the Biden administration.
