The Boulder Police Department in Colorado has refuted claims that there is viable evidence and leads in the 1996 murder case of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey that are not being pursued. The police made this statement in response to the renewed interest in the case triggered by a new Netflix documentary titled “Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey.”
In the documentary, the focus is on the mistakes made by the police and the “media circus” that surrounded the high-profile murder case. JonBenet Ramsey, a child beauty pageant contestant, was found dead in her family’s basement the day after Christmas in 1996. Despite thorough investigations and multiple suspects, the case remains unsolved, with no one ever being prosecuted for her death.
The police chief, Steve Redfearn, emphasized the department’s commitment to solving the case and generating new leads through media coverage and documentaries. He mentioned that the department continues to investigate tips and suspects, while also being cautious about sharing details of the ongoing investigation to protect potential future prosecution.
The case took a new turn in 2008 when new DNA evidence from JonBenet’s clothing pointed to an “unexplained third party” being involved in the killing, clearing her family of any involvement. JonBenet’s father, John Ramsey, has been advocating for further DNA testing and the use of genealogy databases to potentially identify new suspects.
Police have not ruled out DNA testing to help solve the case and have explored new technologies and forensic testing to produce leads. The department continues to work through recommendations from a panel of outside experts to further investigate and possibly solve JonBenet Ramsey’s murder.
