Officials at Alabama A&M apologized for falsely announcing the death of football player Medrick Burnett Jr. The school initially posted online that the 20-year-old athlete had died, based on information from a family member, but later learned that he was still alive and in stable condition at UAB hospital. Burnett was seriously injured in a game last month, suffering brain bleeds and swelling that required a craniotomy. His family has been by his side in the hospital, and they plan to issue a statement about their experience when the time is right.
Burnett, a redshirt freshman linebacker, was injured in a game against rival Alabama State in October. He had transferred from Grambling and had played in seven games this season, recording three tackles in a game on September 21. Alabama A&M, with a 6-5 overall record and 4-3 in the SWAC, has one game left in the season against Florida A&M.
The announcement of Burnett’s death, mistakenly made by the school, was a source of great distress and confusion for the community. Alabama A&M issued an apology for the error and expressed relief and joy that Burnett was still alive and stable. The school and the athletic department are continuing to support Burnett and his family during this difficult time.
