A federal appeals court has ruled that Border Patrol agents cannot cut razor wire that Texas installed on the U.S.-Mexico border in Eagle Pass. The ruling by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is a win for Texas in its ongoing dispute with the Biden administration over immigration policy. Texas has been installing razor wire along its border with Mexico to curb migrant crossings.
The court’s decision comes as President-elect Donald Trump vows to crack down on immigration and a Texas official offers ranchland as a staging area for potential mass deportations. The Biden administration had sought to remove floating barriers installed on the Rio Grande.
The ruling, which blocks Border Patrol agents from damaging the razor wire in Eagle Pass, has been met with Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s approval. The Biden administration has not yet responded to the ruling. The Justice Department argued that the razor wire hindrance the government’s ability to patrol the border and assist migrants in need. The ruling coincides with a 40% drop in arrivals at the U.S.-Mexico border.
