Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks secured her reelection in Iowa’s 1st District after a recount confirmed her lead over Democrat Christina Bohannan by less than a percentage point. This victory helps the GOP maintain control of all four of Iowa’s congressional seats and strengthens their majority in the U.S. House. Miller-Meeks previously won the seat in 2020 after defeating Democrat Rita Hart by six votes.
The recount was requested by Bohannan’s campaign, but Miller-Meeks’ campaign accused Democrats of being “election deniers” and criticized the move as a waste of taxpayer dollars. The state will cover the costs associated with the recount due to the slim margin of victory.
Overall, Republican incumbents held onto Iowa’s other three congressional seats as well, maintaining GOP control of the state’s congressional delegation. The competitive races in the 1st and 3rd Districts attracted millions in paid advertising from national campaign arms for both parties. Zach Nunn, Ashley Hinson, and Randy Feenstra also secured victories in the 3rd, 2nd, and 4th Districts respectively.
