Nurses from UnityPoint Health hospitals in central Iowa have announced their plans to unionize in order to address critical issues affecting their profession and the care they provide. Teamsters Local 90 leaders are working with nurses from four UnityPoint facilities to demand fair treatment, equity in the workplace, and better working conditions. The nurses expressed concerns about inadequate wages, rising healthcare costs, and the impact of patient loads on safe and effective care.
UnityPoint Health responded by acknowledging the challenges faced by nurses and committing to creating a supportive environment where every nurse feels heard, valued, and empowered. The healthcare system highlighted efforts to invest in nursing wages, reduce reliance on contract labor, and support professional development. UnityPoint also established a nurse advisory council to address concerns and implement changes to improve the workplace for nurses.
The nurses are seeking community support by asking people to sign their petition in solidarity with their efforts to ensure fair treatment and better patient care. The unionization process is underway as nurses work towards improving their working conditions and advocating for quality patient care.
