Iowa’s proposed alternative to the federal Summer EBT program has been denied by the USDA, following Gov. Kim Reynolds’ decision to opt-out of the program for the second year in a row. The USDA cited existing programs as being effective in reaching and feeding children, as well as limited federal funds for new projects as reasons for the denial of Iowa’s proposal.
Iowa officials had expressed concerns over the quality of food available through Summer EBT and its ability to serve all children in need. However, the USDA countered by stating that the Summer EBT program is a proven strategy in reducing hunger and improving diet quality.
Despite the denial, the FNS reiterated its commitment to supporting Iowa and its children through the implementation of Summer EBT and the expansion of existing Summer Nutrition Programs. In response to the decision, Gov. Reynolds expressed disappointment but stated that they look forward to presenting their plan to the new administration.
