As Iowa’s hunting seasons approach, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is hosting a webinar on December 5th to discuss Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in deer. Dr. Rachel Ruden, the state wildlife veterinarian, highlights the increasing spread of CWD across the state, with 25 counties reporting at least one case. Since 2013, 397 wild deer have tested positive for CWD, affecting deer populations in various regions of Iowa.
CWD is a neurological disease that causes weight loss, abnormal behavior, and death in infected deer. The webinar aims to educate the public on CWD symptoms and management and encourage participation in disease monitoring efforts. Participants can also learn how to have deer tested for CWD and access the results through an online dashboard provided by the Iowa DNR.
Health officials advise against consuming deer that have tested positive for CWD. The webinar serves as an opportunity for hunters, landowners, and deer enthusiasts to learn more about the disease and ask questions. Individuals can register for the webinar and find more information on CWD and the Iowa DNR’s efforts on their website.
