The Iowa Hawkeyes’ final Kid Captain of the season will be Muscatine native Lukas Hazen, a twelve-year-old who overcame a difficult birth to become an inspiration. Born prematurely with multiple brain bleeds, Hazen was diagnosed with a rare condition but defied the odds and was discharged after five weeks. Despite developing cerebral palsy and now using a wheelchair, Hazen continues to enjoy swimming, music, and art.
On Friday, Nov. 29, Hazen will take the field during the Hawkeyes’ game against Nebraska as a representation of resilience and positivity. The Kid Captain program, which began fifteen years ago, aims to highlight the stories of pediatric patients at the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
This season’s Kid Captains were chosen from over 200 nominations from three different states. Hazen’s journey is a testament to his strength and determination, and his selection will surely inspire both the team and the audience during the upcoming game.
