Two lucky turkeys named Caitlin and Clark received a Thanksgiving pardon from Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds in a traditional ceremony at Terrace Hill on Tuesday. The annual event, which took place in the governor’s backyard, saw the two turkeys spared from becoming part of a Thanksgiving feast.
The turkeys, who weighed in at around 30 pounds each, were raised by turkey farmers Ron and Susie Sieren in Walcott. The governor joked during the ceremony that Caitlin and Clark were “well-behaved” and “had a degree of decorum that you would appreciate at the Thanksgiving table.”
After being pardoned, Caitlin and Clark will be sent to Living History Farms to live out the rest of their days in peace. The turkeys will join past recipients of the pardon, who are also living out their days at the farm.
The Thanksgiving pardon is a long-standing tradition in Iowa and across the United States, where the President also pardons a turkey each year. The ceremony is a way to promote awareness of the turkey industry and celebrate the holiday season.
