Monitoring the consequences of Iowa’s six-week abortion legislation | Political developments

New data released from the Guttmacher Institute shows a significant decrease in clinician-provided abortions in Iowa following the state’s six-week abortion law taking effect. The data reveals that there were about 400 abortions per month in the first half of 2024, which dropped to 250 in August, representing a nearly 40% decrease.

Anti-abortion rights groups, such as Pulse Life Advocates, are pleased with this decline and view it as a positive outcome of the heartbeat law. On the other hand, Planned Parenthood North Central States notes that the decrease in abortions is consistent with what other states, like Texas, experienced after implementing similar laws. They also point out that more Iowa women are now traveling out of state to seek abortion care due to the restrictions.

Dr. Sarah Traxler of Planned Parenthood North Central States highlights a 159% increase in patients from Iowa traveling to neighboring states for abortion services. While some women have the resources to travel, many others do not, raising concerns about access to reproductive healthcare.

Planned Parenthood clinics in Iowa are still providing abortion care before a fetal heartbeat is detected to comply with the new law. However, the decrease in abortions in the state is leading to more women seeking care elsewhere, underscoring the ongoing debate over abortion rights and access in Iowa.
