Elly Henderson, a standout athlete from Riverside, has been named the all News-Telegraph volleyball team captain. In an interview, she shared insights into her athletic journey and the lessons she has learned along the way.
Growing up in a small town and attending a small school, Henderson was exposed to a variety of sports, ultimately leading her to volleyball. She credits the community support and camaraderie within the program for making her experience enjoyable and successful. Her team’s achievement of reaching the State Semi-Finals this season is a source of pride for Henderson, who also overcame a postseason injury to make a remarkable comeback.
Henderson attributes much of her success to her coaching staff, who have played a crucial role in her development both as a player and as a person. The support and trust from her teammates have also been instrumental in her on-court performance.
In addition to volleyball, Henderson is involved in softball and track, as well as maintaining a job and participating in 4-H. While undecided about her future plans, she aspires to attend college.
When asked to offer advice to younger athletes, Henderson emphasized the importance of mindset and enjoying the experience of playing sports. She encourages athletes to prioritize team success over individual differences and to never give up, as these experiences will shape their high school memories. Henderson’s dedication, resilience, and positive attitude have undoubtedly set her up for a bright future in whatever path she chooses to pursue.
