Iowa Football Faces Challenges as Cornerback Jermari Harris Opts Out for NFL Draft
The Iowa football program announced late Friday that starting cornerback Jermari Harris will miss Saturday’s game against Maryland due to a "medical issue." However, sources indicate that this absence will be permanent, as Harris is expected to opt out of the remainder of the 2024 season to prepare for the NFL Draft.
At 6’1" and 189 pounds, Harris has been a standout sixth-year senior in the Big Ten, significantly contributing to the Hawkeyes despite a tumultuous season marked by injuries and inconsistencies within the secondary. As Iowa holds a 6-4 record this season, Harris has played in ten games, recording 27 tackles, three interceptions—including a pick-six against Troy—and 10 passes deflected. Over his five seasons with the program, he has compiled a total of 105 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and eight interceptions in 42 games.
With Harris’s departure, Iowa will face increased pressure against Maryland’s potent aerial attack. True freshman Jaylen Watson, previously behind Harris on the depth chart, is one option for the starting position.
