A listeria outbreak connected to ready-to-eat meat products from Yu Shang Food, Inc. has resulted in one infant death and illness in 10 adults across four states – New York, New Jersey, Illinois, and California. The affected individuals all identified as having Asian heritage. The infant who died was a twin, while their sibling also died but their death was not linked to listeria. The mother of the twins was also sickened but recovered.
The outbreak was discovered during a routine inspection of the Yu Shang Food plant, and contaminated products were found to contain Listeria monocytogenes. The products were recalled on Nov. 9, and an expanded recall was issued more recently. The CDC investigators found a genetic similarity in the listeria strains from all cases, indicating they were linked to the same food source. The recall includes a variety of prepared meat products sold at markets where Yu Shang Food products are available.
Consumers with the recalled products are urged to discard them and clean their refrigerators and freezers to prevent further contamination. Listeria infection can be life-threatening for vulnerable populations and can cause symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and diarrhea. Pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk for severe illness from listeria.
