The wife of Republican presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis, Casey DeSantis, has caused a stir by urging supporters from around the US to participate in the upcoming Iowa caucuses, despite it being illegal for out-of-state residents to do so. During an appearance on Fox News, she encouraged mothers and grandmothers to “descend” on Iowa and participate in the caucuses, claiming they did not need to be residents of the state to do so. However, Iowa law clearly states that caucus voting is restricted to legal residents of the state with photo ID.
This misstep drew criticism and mockery online, with many pointing out the illegal nature of her suggestion. Casey DeSantis later attempted to do damage control, stating that supporters could participate by volunteering in support of Ron DeSantis from around the country. However, the video of her initial comments remained, leading to further backlash.
Critics highlighted the irony of her husband’s focus on voter fraud in Florida, despite little evidence of such crimes, and called for both Ron DeSantis and Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds to address and condemn the remarks. Trump, the frontrunner in the Republican nomination race, also weighed in, accusing Casey DeSantis of promoting voter fraud to boost her husband’s campaign.
As the Iowa caucuses approached, with Trump leading the polls by a wide margin, DeSantis remained in second place and faced backlash over his wife’s controversial comments.
