Founded by Josh Parise, the club focuses on historical European martial arts and aims to create a community where decency and human connection prevail. Frustrated by the coarsening political discourse that has permeated American life, Parise implemented the non-political rule, starting in 2016, to ensure that personal attacks and contentious debates do not overshadow the shared experience of sword fighting.
The club attracts individuals from a wide spectrum of political and religious affiliations, allowing members to engage in combat with respect and camaraderie. Club volunteer Kat Licause emphasizes that the ban on political talk has strengthened relationships within the group, creating a familial understanding among the members.
Participants like high school English teacher Todd Rooney appreciate the inclusive environment where they can learn and teach each other, regardless of differing beliefs. He remarks on the importance of confronting one another as "fully human," especially in a context where safety and mutual respect are paramount despite wielding weapons.
As members don their masks and armor during competitions, the spirit of fun, community, and mutual support reigns. With potluck tables and a casual vibe, the Pittsburgh Sword Fighters exemplify how common ground can be sought even in today’s divided climate, proving that connection is possible when politics are left at the door.
