Iowa State Cyclone Rocketry Club Soars to New Heights with Winter Achievements
The Iowa State Cyclone Rocketry Club showcased its innovative spirit and team collaboration this past weekend during the Iowa Society of Amateur Rocketeers (ISOAR) launch. The event marked a significant milestone for club members, with several earning Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 High Powered Rocketry (HPR) certifications.
Club President Sydney Turner, a senior in aerospace engineering, emphasized that these accomplishments stem from meticulous preparation and teamwork. “We encourage our members to build personal rockets to understand how systems work together,” Turner stated. Weekly work sessions facilitate knowledge exchange, allowing experienced members to mentor newcomers. As club member Collin Brumm noted, “It would’ve taken a lot longer to get certified without learning from the club.”
While a background in aerospace is beneficial, Turner reassured aspiring members, “You are not expected to know anything; just bring your passion and willingness to learn.” As the first female president of the Cyclone Rocketry Club, Turner draws on her knowledge of propulsion and flight mechanics to guide the team through diverse challenges.
The club is gearing up for the annual Spaceport America Cup, competing in the 10k Student Researched and Developed Hybrid division. This year’s entry will utilize a hybrid motor for the first time due to changes in propellant handling capabilities. The club also aims for significant achievements with a test vehicle targeting 30,000 feet and plans to compete in the Argonia Cup, focusing on designing a recoverable rocket capable of launching golf balls to high altitudes.
Turner’s leadership promotes inclusivity and mentorship, highlighting the club’s role in shaping her career aspirations.
