Three state legislative races in Iowa are heading to a recount, along with a congressional race. Candidates had until Monday to request a recount, following the canvass on Friday. Two Iowa Senate races – one in District 14 and one in District 20, as well as a House race in District 98, will be subject to recounts.
In Senate District 14, Republican challenger Mark Hanson is seeking a recount against Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott, who currently leads by 24 votes. Sen. Nate Boulton has also requested a recount in Senate District 20, where he is behind by 44 votes. Additionally, GOP challenger Nathan Ramker has requested a recount in House District 98, where incumbent Rep. Monica Kurth leads by 45 votes.
The recounts will be conducted by boards consisting of representatives from each campaign and a neutral member agreed upon by both parties. If the margin of victory is less than 50 votes or 1% of the total votes, the state will pay for the recount. Otherwise, the candidate requesting the recount must cover the cost.
In the 1st Congressional District race, Democrat Christina Bohannan is seeking a recount against U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, who leads by 802 votes. Miller-Meeks’ campaign criticized the recount request, calling it a delaying tactic.
Regardless of the recount outcomes, the results will not impact the current Republican majority in the Iowa Legislature. The Iowa Capital Dispatch is part of States Newsroom, an independent news network supported by grants and donors.
