ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim A.A. Khan has filed applications for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, Defense Minister Gallant, and other senior Israeli officials for alleged war crimes. The court also issued an arrest warrant for Hamas figure Deif, accused of crimes against humanity and war crimes. The ICC’s investigation into possible war crimes by both Israel and Palestinian militants started three years ago. Netanyahu called Khan a “rogue prosecutor,” while Israeli President Herzog condemned the arrest warrants as a “dark day for justice.” Human rights advocates welcomed the decision, with Kenneth Roth of Human Rights Watch calling it an important step forward for justice for Palestinian civilians in Gaza. Governments providing military support to Israel, such as the U.S., were warned that they could be charged with aiding and abetting crimes if they continue to provide weapons while these alleged crimes are ongoing. The arrest warrants have made Netanyahu and Gallant subject to arrest in any of the ICC’s 125 member countries, shrinking their world significantly.
