Iowa State Falls to No. 17 Baylor in Tough Battle

WACO, Texas – Iowa State University’s Cyclones faced a challenging match against the No. 17 Baylor Bears, ultimately succumbing with set scores of 23-25, 18-25, 25-19, and 16-25. Despite an initial lead and a spirited effort, Iowa State couldn’t maintain momentum, leaving them with a record of 9-11 overall and 3-6 in Big 12 play.

The Cyclones began strong in the first set, taking an 8-4 lead before Baylor rallied to take control. They managed to even the score at 23 after a series of plays, but Baylor clinched the set on their next point. The second set saw Iowa State struggle, hitting just .152 compared to Baylor’s .312, leading to a 25-18 loss. However, Iowa State rebounded in the third, executing crucial blocks and overcoming an early deficit to win 25-19, forcing a fourth set.

In the final set, the teams were tied at 7-7 before Baylor surged ahead again, ultimately sealing the match at 25-16. Faith DeRonde was a standout player with 16 kills and eight digs, while Lilly Wachholz added nine kills and Brooke Stonestreet made a significant impact with 19 digs, setting a new program milestone. Additionally, setter Morgan Brandt is on the verge of breaking into the program’s top ten for assists.

Iowa State will look to regroup as they prepare for their next match against No. 18 TCU in Fort Worth, scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m., seeking to improve their conference standing.
