United Airlines is increasing the thresholds for customers to reach elite status in their MileagePlus program by about 25% next year. This change is part of a larger trend in the airline industry to reward travelers based on how much they spend rather than how far they fly. Elite status comes with perks like free upgrades, earlier boarding, and better seat selection.
The lowest level status, Silver Premier, will now require customers to earn 5,000 premier qualifying points and fly 15 qualifying flights, up from 4,000 points and 12 flights. Customers can also reach Silver status by spending 6,000 points alone, up from 5,000.
Similar increases in requirements apply to Gold, Platinum, and 1K status levels. Customers will earn premier qualifying points for every dollar spent on United flights, with some credit cards in their portfolio offering additional points for spending.
The changes are aimed at rewarding high-spending customers and addressing the growing crowds in airport lounges and boarding groups. Overall, United’s move to increase elite status thresholds reflects a broader strategy by airlines to boost profits and create a more exclusive feel for loyal customers.
