In preparation for the upcoming Nov. 5 general election, questionnaires were sent out by the T-R to candidates in competitive races within Iowa House District 52, which encompasses the city of Marshalltown and the southeast quadrant of the county. The spotlight in this article focuses on the race between two-term incumbent Sue Cahill (D-Marshalltown) and Republican candidate David Blom, a sheet metal worker and former legislative clerk.
Blom, a Marshalltown native, is running to give Marshall County a voice in Des Moines, focusing on supporting students, tax relief, job retention, and veterans’ services. Cahill, a retired educator with experience at the local and state level, is seeking a third term, emphasizing her commitment to constituents and a proven track record in various committees.
Both candidates differ on issues such as Education Savings Accounts, funding for public schools, and restrictions on books with sensitive content. Blom emphasizes protecting children and supporting women’s rights, while Cahill advocates for civil rights protections, respect for transgender students, and the right to access healthcare without government interference.
On the topic of abortion legislation, Blom supports the current fetal heartbeat bill and aims to focus on building strong families. In contrast, Cahill believes in a woman’s right to make healthcare decisions in consultation with her medical team and would work to restore safe and legal abortions in Iowa.
As the election approaches, the race for House District 52 demonstrates a clear contrast in values and priorities between the two candidates vying for the seat in Des Moines.
