ACLU finds that Iowa election officials mishandled voter roll purges

The American Civil Liberties Union has raised concerns about some Iowa county auditors improperly processing “mass voter challenges” just weeks before the Nov. 5 general election, violating state and federal laws. The ACLU has sent letters to all 99 Iowa county auditors and the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office to ensure compliance with the law and to reinstate any voters who may have been wrongly removed. These challenges, submitted without personal knowledge of the voters, are part of a nationwide trend aimed at disrupting elections by pushing false narratives of voter fraud. Despite claims by former President Trump and his allies, studies show that noncitizen voting is rare.

The mass voter challenges in Iowa are separate from a directive issued by Secretary of State Paul Pate to have poll workers challenge over 2,200 registered voters based on citizenship. The ACLU encourages new citizens to contact them or their county auditor if they are concerned about their voter registration or ballot being challenged. Despite these efforts to undermine voter confidence, Iowa election officials are committed to upholding state and federal laws to protect voters’ rights. The ACLU urges Iowa voters to exercise their right to vote with confidence as the democracy depends on all citizens participating in the electoral process.
