Press Article: Asian Student Union Revitalizes Community at Iowa State
Ames, IA – Early February 2024 – The Asian Student Union (ASU) at Iowa State University has taken significant strides to foster connections and celebrate cultural identities among students since its revival earlier this year. The organization has emerged as a vibrant meeting point for students from diverse backgrounds yearning for support and camaraderie.
Recently, ASU hosted a successful fundraising event at 1+1 Restaurant in Ames, uniting members to generate funds for upcoming community-centric initiatives. Jaelyn Luong, a senior in culinary food science and ASU representative, emphasized the organization’s mission to raise awareness and strengthen the Asian community, which had diminished in the past. “Now is the perfect time to bring it back,” she stated, highlighting ASU’s efforts to unite all Asian and Asian-American identities on campus.
ASU’s programming includes a variety of events designed to foster a sense of belonging. The organization is currently planning a large cultural festival scheduled for spring 2025, featuring cultural performances, food tastings, and a fashion show. “We want people to see the diverse Asian cultures and find connection through their culture,” said Ethan Kono, ASU’s vice president and a cybersecurity engineering major.
Members of ASU, like junior Trish Nguyen, express the club’s importance as a safe and welcoming space at Iowa State. Nguyen remarked, “I hope people find something in ASU that makes them feel welcome.”
Sophomore Aaron Luong shared similar sentiments about the personal growth opportunities ASU provides, stating he joined to connect with others who share similar backgrounds.
Through community-building events and activities, the Asian Student Union continues to create an inclusive environment where students feel appreciated, connected, and at home. For more information, check out ASU’s website or follow them on Instagram.
