In a surprising turn of events, the Republican stronghold of western Iowa has seen a Democrat win a seat in the state Legislature. Josh Turek narrowly defeated his opponent by only six votes in the 2022 elections to represent House District 20, which includes Council Bluffs and Carter Lake in Pottawattamie County. Turek, a former Paralympian, emphasized the need to focus on issues that affect the middle class, vulnerable populations, and youth in society.
However, Turek faces a tough challenge from James Wassell, a 26-year-old Marine veteran and industrial engine service technician who recently moved to Council Bluffs. Wassell highlighted the importance of affordable energy and living costs for young families, as well as his support for eliminating the income tax in Iowa to attract more people to the state.
Both candidates shared their views on important topics such as abortion restrictions, access to fertility treatments, and education savings accounts. Turek expressed support for the viability standard in abortion restrictions, while Wassell emphasized the need for community support and counseling for women facing tough decisions. When it comes to education savings accounts, Turek opposed their existence, whereas Wassell believed in giving parents control over their tax dollars for their children’s education.
As the race heats up, both candidates are focusing on key issues such as workforce development, affordable housing, and creating a competitive environment to retain college graduates and attract new residents to Iowa. With contrasting views on various topics, the House District 20 race promises to be an interesting and closely watched contest in the upcoming legislative session.
