Singer-songwriter Matthew Sweet suffered a debilitating stroke while on tour in Toronto in mid-October, leaving him unable to perform for the foreseeable future. To cover the expenses of his recovery, his management company set up a GoFundMe page as Sweet does not have insurance or touring income. The GoFundMe page aims to raise money for his medical care, including being flown back to the U.S. on an ambulance transport plane and spending time at a specialized rehabilitation center. The estimated cost of his care is close to a quarter of a million dollars, prompting his team to ask for donations. As of Wednesday morning, the fund had raised over $150,000 from around 2,700 donors, including notable names like Judd Apatow, John Mayer, and Peter Buck. Sweet’s manager praised his determination and focus in his artistic and intellectual pursuits, expressing confidence in his ability to recover. Due to health issues, Sweet had to cancel over a month of shows, including opening for Hanson and his own headline dates. Sweet has released over a dozen albums since his debut in 1986, with his most recent being “Catspaw” in 2021.
