Iowans are gearing up for the upcoming fall election, where they will have the opportunity to vote for a president, U.S. House Representatives, state lawmakers, and more. This election marks the first time voters will experience the impacts of sweeping voting law changes passed by Republicans in the Iowa Legislature, which have shortened the time allowed for voting by mail, voting early in-person, and voting on Election Day.
Early voting will begin on Wednesday, October 16 at county auditor’s offices or county elections offices, with some counties offering additional early voting sites. The first day county auditors can start mailing absentee ballots to voters who requested them will also be on October 16. As the voter pre-registration deadline approaches on October 21, Iowans are urged to ensure they are registered or update their registration if they have recently moved.
Voter ID laws are in place in Iowa, requiring voters to bring specific forms of identification to polling places. Those who wish to vote by mail must request a ballot by October 21 and ensure it is received by the county auditor by 8 p.m. on Election Day, November 5. Officials recommend mailing completed ballots as early as possible to avoid delays.
For Iowans needing assistance in returning their absentee ballot, certain guidelines must be followed, including designating a trusted individual as a “delivery agent.” Those who prefer to vote in-person can do so on Election Day, November 5. The Iowa Secretary of State’s office has compiled voting resources and a polling place locator to assist voters in participating in this important election.
