The Treasury Department sanctioned the pro-Hamas organization Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network for fundraising for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a designated terrorist group. The organization, based in Vancouver, advocates for the rights of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. Kates and her husband, both associated with Samidoun, were also sanctioned. The Treasury Department stated that Samidoun diverts funds for terrorist activities and serves as a front organization. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, operating in Gaza and the West Bank, was involved in attacks against Israeli civilians. Samidoun, previously banned in Germany and Israel, has been criticized for its ties to terrorist organizations.
In an interview with NBC News, Kates expressed support for Hamas’ attack on Israel and made anti-Israel statements. The Treasury Department’s actions aim to protect legitimate charity organizations by identifying sham charities. Barbara McQuade, a former U.S. Attorney, stated that the designation will impact Samidoun’s ability to fundraise. While it is not a crime for protest groups to interact with Samidoun, the State Department will continue to disrupt sham organizations funding terrorism. The joint action by the U.S. and Canadian governments highlights the importance of cracking down on organizations that support terrorist activities disguised as humanitarian efforts.
