Taiwan reports a record 153 Chinese military aircraft dispatched during war games towards the island

The Taiwan defense ministry reported a record 153 Chinese military aircraft detected during Chinese war games near the island. China held the “Joint Sword-2024B” drills as a warning against “separatist acts” following a speech by Taiwan President Lai Ching-te that Beijing denounced. The ministry said 28 aircraft crossed the sensitive median line of the Taiwan Strait and other activities were noted around Taiwan’s southeastern coast and in the South China Sea near the Pratas Islands. Additionally, 14 Chinese navy ships and 12 official ships were spotted in the area. Premier Cho Jung-tai stated that such drills disturb peace and stability in the region and affect international navigational rights. The Taiwan government rejects China’s territorial claims and asserts that only the island’s people can decide their future. The ministry’s update on Chinese military activity highlights the growing tensions between Taiwan and China, with Taiwan condemning the drills as a threat to regional stability and international air and sea space. The increased Chinese military presence is seen as a response to Taiwan’s push for independence and a warning against any moves towards separation.
