Legendary wordsmith Ka, renowned New York rapper, passes away at 52

Ka, a celebrated New York City rapper and former firefighter, has passed away at the age of 52. His death was confirmed on his social media accounts, with tributes praising his work in firefighting, his contributions to his neighborhood, and his impact on the hip-hop community.

Ka gained recognition for his artistry later in life, impressing critics and fellow artists with his subtle and profound lyrics. He collaborated with notable figures like GZA of Wu-Tang Clan and producer Roc Marciano. His music was described as containing elements of pain, grief, and wisdom in every bar, earning him the title of “New York Rap’s Greatest Living Treasure.”

Despite his success as a rapper, Ka spent 20 years as a firefighter, reaching the rank of captain. He was a first responder during the 9/11 tragedy. Although he initially pursued a career in music, his early dreams faded until he returned to recording in the 2000s.

Ka’s influence in the music industry grew with each album he released, and his reputation as a top lyricist was solidified with collaborations with hip-hop legends like GZA. His last known recording, “The Thief Next to Jesus,” was released in August.

Ka is survived by his wife, mother, and sister. His wife, Mimi Valdes, described him as her king, hero, and best friend in a heartfelt tribute. His unexpected passing has left a void in the hip-hop community and beyond, with many mourning the loss of a talented artist and dedicated public servant.
