Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., expressed agreement with President Joe Biden’s recent comments that the upcoming election will likely be “free and fair,” but he added that it may not necessarily be “peaceful.” Schiff raised concerns that if the election is close and former President Donald Trump loses again, Trump may contest the results. Schiff suggested that Trump’s motivation for challenging the election results is not due to any flaws in the election process, but rather because he believes that losing the election could potentially lead to legal consequences for him.
Schiff highlighted the violent events that took place during the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot as an example of the potential for unrest following Trump’s claims of election fraud. He emphasized the importance of ensuring a sizable margin of victory for the Democratic candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris, in order to mitigate the risk of violence and challenges to the election results from Republicans.
Schiff, who is currently running for Senate, stressed the need to prioritize voter turnout and securing a significant victory margin in order to prevent potential challenges to the election results. He called attention to the ongoing threat of violence in the aftermath of the election and urged for a vigorous effort to ensure a peaceful transition of power. The Trump campaign has not yet responded to these comments.
