In Greece’s Corinthia region, a devastating wildfire has killed two people and injured dozens more, prompting a massive response from firefighters and volunteers. The fire has ravaged a large forested area, with hundreds of firefighters and 22 aircraft deployed to battle the blaze. Other European Union countries, including Croatia and Italy, have also provided assistance in tackling the wildfire.
This year’s wildfire season in Greece started earlier than usual, in April, and has been characterized by extreme weather conditions such as drought and heatwaves. The Greek fire service has had to contend with a total of 41 wildfires in the past 24 hours alone, with the ongoing fire in Corinthia being one of the most challenging they have faced this season.
Residents in the region, such as Antonis Kakavitsos, have likened the destruction caused by the wildfire to those seen in the year 2000. Greece, along with other southern European countries, faces destructive wildfires every summer, exacerbated by the effects of global warming.
The efforts to contain the wildfire in Corinthia highlight the urgent need for climate action and increased resources to combat the growing threat of wildfires in the region. As firefighters continue to battle the blaze, the community remains on high alert, hoping for a swift containment of the fire and minimal further damage.
