Meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy to take place following Harris’ commitment of steadfast support for Ukraine amidst Russia-Ukraine conflict

Republican candidate for US president, Donald Trump, claims he could quickly end the Ukraine war with a deal. He plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York on Friday. This announcement came after President Joe Biden announced $8bn in military assistance for Ukraine and Vice President Kamala Harris promised unwavering support.

Trump has criticized the level of US support for Ukraine and suggested they should have made a deal with Russia when the invasion began in February 2022. Despite this, he believes he can secure a peace deal, even hinting that Ukraine may have to cede territory.

Harris, Trump’s Democratic rival, expressed support for Ukraine, contrasting those who support land swaps for peace as advocates for surrender. This comes after Zelenskyy requested a meeting with Biden, Harris, and Trump to present his victory plan for defeating Russia.

Trump and Zelenskyy have not met in person since Trump left office in 2021. They spoke on the phone in July, but Trump initially seemed poised to snub Zelenskyy’s meeting request. Zelenskyy’s visit to a munitions factory with a Harris ally upset Trump, who continues to criticize the Ukrainian president on the campaign trail.

Despite their differences, Trump and Zelenskyy are set to meet, with Trump expressing confidence in his ability to end the war through negotiations. The meeting is expected to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the potential for peace.
