Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region as a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph. The eye of the storm hit about 10 miles west-southwest of Perry, Florida, around 11:10 p.m. ET on Thursday. It weakened to a Category 1 as it moved inland across Georgia, but the threat of life-threatening storm surge, winds, and heavy rain continued. The storm could bring a wind swath more than 400 miles wide and “unsurvivable” storm surge, according to forecasters. Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina declared emergencies ahead of the storm, with flooding being a major concern in those states. Helene started as a tropical storm in the western Caribbean Sea, causing flooding in the Cayman Islands before intensifying into a powerful hurricane. Residents in the region are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to stay safe during the storm.
