As Tropical Storm Helene moves north, its effects are being felt in South Carolina with strong waves battering downtown Charleston, leading to a tropical storm warning. In Florida, various hurricane and tropical storm warnings have been lifted or downgraded as Helene moves across Georgia, now classified as a tropical storm. More than 2 million people are without power across the southeastern U.S. after the storm hit as a Category 4 hurricane. In Georgia, residents are advised to shelter from the storm which is moving rapidly inland, bringing strong winds and heavy rain. Despite easing to a Category 1 storm, Helene still poses a significant threat across 12 states. Residents in Tallahassee, Florida managed to avoid the worst of the storm, as the city dodged a direct hit. The damage caused by Hurricane Helene is expected to become clearer as the sun comes up, with power infrastructure likely to be damaged for weeks or months in some areas. The National Hurricane Center warns of a “life-threatening situation” in Georgia as the storm continues to move through the state.
