Hezbollah, the Lebanese armed group, has confirmed the death of one of its top commanders, Ibrahim Muhammad Qubaisi, following an Israeli air strike in Beirut. Qubaisi, also known as “Hajj Abu Musa”, was responsible for a 2000 attack that resulted in the kidnapping and killing of three Israeli soldiers. The strike led to the death of six people and injured 15 others, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health.
The Israeli attacks in Lebanon have resulted in the death of 569 people and wounded 1,835 others. The escalating violence along the Israeli-Lebanese border has forced tens of thousands of Lebanese people to flee from the south to Beirut. Hezbollah has retaliated by launching hundreds of rockets into Israel, some of which were intercepted by Israel’s defenses.
The United Nations Security Council is set to meet to address the escalating conflict, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warning that Lebanon is on the brink of a new conflict. Guterres urged world leaders to be alarmed by the situation and emphasized the need to prevent Lebanon from becoming another Gaza.
The recent violence comes on the heels of last week’s mass detonation targeting Hezbollah members in Lebanon, raising fears of a larger all-out conflict in the Middle East. The developments have heightened tensions in the region and threaten to destabilize the already volatile situation between Israel and Lebanon.
