What can the EU learn about security from the massive IT outage?


The European Union has been emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity, especially in light of recent events that have caused worldwide havoc. A massive outage occurred after a defect in a software update by cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike impacted hospitals, banks, broadcasters, and airports, preventing them from accessing Microsoft apps and services. Nathalie Devillier from the EU European Cyber Competence Centre highlighted the need to question the location of cloud and IT security providers, advocating for them to be within the European space to avoid depending on foreign technology solutions. She also emphasized the importance of companies and individuals being better trained on cybersecurity.

The EU has been proactive in strengthening cybersecurity, passing a directive in 2022 that member states must adopt to enhance cybersecurity in more than 18 sectors. This directive requires companies, both large and small, to be more digitally vigilant. The EU Agency for Cybersecurity, ENISA, is closely monitoring the situation and is in contact with member states to assess the impact and take follow-up actions if necessary. This incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of cybersecurity and the need for constant vigilance in an increasingly digital world.
