Major DOT road construction projects scheduled for central Iowa

Central Iowa is booming with construction projects this summer, with four major undertakings set to improve transportation infrastructure in the area. The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced that these projects will not only ease traffic congestion but also accommodate the projected increase in traffic volume in the coming years.

One of the ongoing projects is widening I-35 to six lanes from Ankeny to Huxley, with a completion date set for 2028. The East Mixmaster project is also on track to be completed by the same year. The Hickman Road I-35/80 interchange will undergo construction from 2024 to 2028, while the Southwest Mixmaster project will kick off in 2026 and be completed in stages throughout 2029.

Scott Nixon, DOT District One Construction Engineer, emphasized the importance of these projects in addressing growing congestion in the metro area. He highlighted the impact on traffic flow on I-35, particularly during peak times, and the anticipated changes in traffic patterns as construction progresses.

To keep the public informed about these projects, the Iowa DOT has created the DSM Interstates web page and DSM Interstates Facebook site. These platforms provide detailed information about each project and offer regular updates to keep residents and commuters in the loop.

With these construction projects underway, central Iowa is poised to see significant improvements in its transportation infrastructure, providing a smoother and more efficient experience for drivers in the area.
